English: The painting shows the locks of the Rideau Canal, the Barracks Hill promontory (which would be become Parliament Hill) containing three stone barracks and a hospital, and John By's private residence on the opposite hill (the site of the future Major's Hill Park). A wharf and a building occupied by the Royal Engineers is located below the By residence, on the bank of the Ottawa River. The Commissariat is located to the right of the locks (the building still stands and serves as the Bytown Museum).
Français : On peut voir les écluses du canal Rideau, la Colline des Casernes (le promontoire qui allait devenir la Colline du Parlement - à l’époque du tableau, il y avait trois casernes en pierre et un hôpital au sommet de la colline), la résidence privée du lieutenant-colonel John By (au sommet de la colline oppose - située dans ce qui est aujourd’hui le parc Major’s Hill), un quai et le bâtiment qui logeait les Royal Engineers (plus bas, au bord de la rivière des Outaouais), et le Commissariat (en remontant les écluses, à droite - seul bâtiment représenté dans le tableau qui existe toujours).
