Была создана в 1983 году в результате слияния «Presbyterian Church in the United States», чьи церкви были расположены в южных и приграничных штатах, с «United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America», чьи приходы можно найти в каждом штате. Церковь насчитывает 1 760 200 прихожан, более двадцати тысяч служителей в 10083 приходов на конец 2013 года. История пресвитерианской церкви прослеживается с 16 века, конкретно начиная с протестантскойРеформации. Пресвитерианские идеи этой конфессии, ее догматические установления и многие культурные традиции были приняты под влиянием учения и религиозной деятельности швейцарско-французского богослова и юриста Жана Кальвина.
